Holmen Crisp AS was established in 1991, as a family business, demerged from the old brewery Holmen Brænderi AS (HB) in Gjøvik by the lake Mjøsa, where Mr. Arne Rostad and family was the main shareholder. The brewery was an importan processing plant for potatoes and grains.
Through the potato processing, flatbread production with potatoes and peas grew and a modern line was set up. Ringerikes (Kvammes) Flatbread factory was bought in 1954 and their specialty was Erterbrød – yellow peas flatbread. In 1955 HB took over Toten Flatbrødfabrik at Lena where there had also been milling since 1952. They had a separate recipe for Totenbrød which today is our potato flatbread. Both lines were then moved to the brewery in Gjøvik and built into one line. This is the same production line we are baking with today and many of the handmade machine parts are over 100 years old and in full vigor in our factory in Kapp. In the 1930s they had international views and the packaging had Norwegian and English text – more relevant then ever in these days. The packaging design has participated in several art expeditions as a proof of design that lasts. In 1994 the company took over the production of gluten free flour from Sweden. Jyttemjøl was established by Jytte Uth-Norlander and her husband. Jytte died in a tragic accident and the company was therefore for sale. The gluten free milling business currently accounts for 70% of the turnover in the company. Holmen Crisp has expanded the Jytte series with 4 different flour mixes and a breakfast cereal.
In 2000 the company bought a bakery and their old recipe of “Rømmebrød” a sweet and crispy cinnamon biscuit from Gudbrandsdalen.
